Agroforestry Project, Fruit and Nut Orchard

Heart-led, fruitful partnerships are at the core of OnePlate’s achievements, and our Agroforestry Project in Manila is particularly special. It was the first time one of our partner cafés came on board to fund an entire project, from start to finish!

The Fruit and Nut Orchard in Manila supports the health and wellbeing of hundreds of street children. Thanks to the support of Warran Glen Café, OnePlate facilitated the planting of more than 1,500 trees, including mango, guyabano, rambutan, jackfruit, grapefruit, star apple, banana, lemon, tamarind and mulberry. And nut trees – pili nut, coconut, pecan and walnuts.

The produce is used firstly for food programs that support the children, then 60% of the produce is sold at market as an income-generating programme for orchard maintenance and paid staff.

But that’s not all. Alongside the orchard, an agroforestry nursery full of vegetables was planted, as well as a fingerlings nursery for self-production, which will operate as a system to help control the pond water.

Thanks to the generosity of Warran Glen Café and their customers, this is not just food for today, it’s food for generations. This wonderful orchard will feed thousands of children for many years to come. What a beautiful example of the generosity of Australia’s food culture in action!
